Hey followers! It’s Nuked here. I’m sure you’ve heard the news that Twitter will start winding down its legacy verified program and removing its “legacy verified checkmarks” starting on April 1st.

It’s not necessarily a surprise, though. CEO Elon Musk has been talking about getting rid of these checkmarks since November and made it clear that they’d be going away in the coming months. According to Musk, these checkmarks were given out in a “corrupt and nonsensical” manner.

It is worth noting that April 1st is April Fools’ Day, and that a large part of Elon Musk’s personality is being a troll. So, it’s possible that this announcement, which came from the Twitter Verified account and not Musk’s account, is just an attempt to freak out people with legacy check marks.

That said, it’s also possible that Twitter actually does intend to do this. It recently added a huge banner advertising the change at the top of one verified Verge reporter’s timeline, so maybe it’s really going to happen.

If so, Twitter has said that users can subscribe to its Blue subscription if they want to keep their blue check. Brands or government entities can apply for gray or gold check marks, though the gold ones might come at a steep price.

Only time will tell what happens with legacy check marks and whether or not Twitter follows through with its plan. But, I’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as more news comes out!
