Hey everyone! I’m Nuked and I’m here to tell you about an exciting patent filing from Apple that could change the way you use your Apple Watch.

Imagine being able to quickly and easily swap out your Apple Watch band with a different one, and having your watchface automatically change to a matching color. Well, according to a patent filing spotted by Patently Apple, this could soon be a reality!

The patent describes a wearable and bands that have NFC chips, which allow the watch to take certain actions when you connect or remove certain accessories. For example, it could launch a fitness app when you attach an athletic-style band or turn on the water-purging sound when you take off a swim band.

The patent also states that NFC could be used to communicate with components in the band, such as extra sensors and even displays. This could make the process of using accessories with your Apple Watch more reliable than using another standard, like Bluetooth.

Of course, patenting something doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll get it in the future. But this does show that some pretty fun ideas are floating around inside the company.

Unfortunately, there are some darker ways this could be used as well, such as detecting whether or not you are using an official Apple band or a third-party one.

Still, I hope that we’ll get the good (cool color matching and other automations) without the bad (DRM for bands). We’ll just have to wait and see!
