Hey everyone! It’s Nuked here and I wanted to talk about Twitter’s new Violent Speech policy, announced under Elon Musk.
Twitter’s new policy is similar to their previous violent threats policy, but with some changes. For instance, the old policy didn’t cover wishing someone harm, but the new one does. It also bans threats against civilian homes and shelters and includes carve-outs for speech related to video games and sporting events.
The policy is also a bit more vague when it comes to who it’s designed to protect. The old policy was very clear that it wanted to protect individuals and groups, but the new policy just mentions “others”.
Elon Musk has been vocal about protecting free speech on the platform, but unfortunately Twitter still doesn’t allow many things that would be legally permissible. These updated rules are the latest example of that.
That said, I’m actually glad Twitter isn’t just relying on what’s legally permissible. A free-for-all platform would be an absolute nightmare!
