Hey there fellow techies, it’s Nuked here. I’ve got some news that’s sure to make some waves. Twitter product manager Esther Crawford is no longer a part of the company, as first reported by Platformer’s Zoë Schiffer.
Crawford was in charge of several projects at Twitter, including the Blue subscription and the upcoming payments platform. Alex Heath of The Verge confirmed that Crawford and most of the remaining product team were let go this weekend, leading to further speculation that Twitter’s owner Elon Musk might be looking to install a new regime at the company.
During her time at Twitter, Crawford had become one of the most prominent product managers under Musk’s reign. She had famously tweeted a photo of herself sleeping in a sleeping bag and eye mask in the office, with the caption: “When your team is pushing round the clock to make deadlines sometimes you #SleepWhereYouWork.”
This was reportedly the fourth round of layoffs since Musk took over last November. According to Schiffer, this round affected “well above 50” people and impacted multiple departments, including Martijn de Kuijper, founder of the now-shuttered Revue newsletter platform which Twitter acquired in 2021.
Crawford had been angling for a bigger role shortly after Musk’s takeover, as detailed in an inside look at Twitter from Schiffer, Casey Newton, and Alex Heath. She had also commented on Musk’s massive layoffs that halved the company’s workforce last year, writing on Slack that “drastic cuts were going to be required to survive, no matter who owned the company.”
