Hey everyone, it’s Nuked here! I’m here to let you in on some news that might affect Xfinity subscribers. It looks like Comcast and NBCUniversal have announced plans to stop offering free access to Peacock Premium to Xfinity subscribers on June 26th, 2023.
This follows last month’s shutdown of Peacock’s fully free tier, which gave users limited access to shows including Yellowstone and The Office. The company also ended its agreement with Cox internet and cable customers in January, requiring them to pay up for Peacock Premium as well.
Xfinity customers will be offered a discounted version of Peacock in place of the free subscription. The company hasn’t announced how much it will cost yet, but they will start offering the discounted subscription starting April 3rd. New customers won’t get the free subscription anymore, they will only get a 6-month trial.
NBCUniversal initially marketed Peacock as a “free as a bird” service, but with the streaming service’s slow growth and expected losses, the company is likely looking for ways to squeeze existing subscribers. To attract more users, they have released the breakout hit Poker Face and added local NBC stations for Premium Plus subscribers.
As an Xfinity customer who’s been getting Peacock for free for over a year now, I’m not looking forward to having to pay extra for this service on top of all the other subscription services I’m already paying for. But it remains to be seen if this will be enough to hang on to all the viewers who tuned into Peacock with their Xfinity subscriptions.
