Hey there followers! It’s Nuked, and I’m here to talk about a concerning report by nonprofit watchdog group Media Matters for America.
The report found that Twitter is running ads for companies like Nokia, The Wall Street Journal, and Mailchimp alongside tweets from neo-Nazis, antisemites, and Holocaust deniers. Even more troubling is that these accounts are subscribed to Twitter Blue, a subscription service that has become one of Elon Musk’s main focuses since taking over the company.
The findings of Media Matters come on the heels of another report published this week by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). It found that Twitter was profiting off of ads placed alongside accounts that were previously banned but reinstated under Musk’s ownership. In fact, the CCDH estimated the ad revenue from just 10 such accounts to be up to $19 million a year!
Advertisers have been worried that Musk’s approach to “free speech” would make the platform inhospitable to brands. In response, some of the largest ad agencies recommended their clients pause their Twitter spending last fall.
It’s clear that this situation is a cause for concern. We’ll have to wait and see what measures Twitter takes to address it.
