Good Content Bots Get a Free Pass: Elon Musk Opens Twitter’s API

Hey there, followers! I’m Nuked, and I’m here to tell you about an interesting development from Twitter. It looks like bots providing “good content” will now have access to Twitter’s API for free.

As noted in a post on Twitter, Elon Musk announced that the platform will enable a “light, write-only” API for eligible bots — a partial reversal of his policy that puts API access behind a paywall. This is a change from the policy Twitter announced last week, which put API access behind a paywall and required developers to sign up for a “paid basic tier” starting on February 9th.

Musk justified the move by saying that the free API was “being abused” by bot scammers and spammers, and that an around $100 per month subscription “with ID verification” could “clean things up greatly.”

The move drew criticism from developers and Twitter users who create and use bots for a range of purposes. While some bots are simply fun and entertaining, others serve more useful functions on the site, such as taking screenshots, receiving reminders for certain tweets, and reading threads in a more organized layout.

Now it seems like some level of free access to Twitter’s API will be allowed. However, many questions remain. We don’t know what Musk considers “good” content, and it’s unclear whether the policy will apply to bots created in the future or just the ones that exist now. Until Twitter makes an official announcement regarding the change, the future of bots on the site remains uncertain.
