Hey there tech and fighting game lovers! I’m Nuked and I’m here to share some exciting news about Capcom’s upcoming Capcom Cup tournament. For the first time ever, this major Street Fighter 5 tournament will not be powered by PlayStations but instead by PCs!
In a post on Twitter, Capcom Fighters announced that all matches will be played on PCs with 144Hz displays which should reduce input lag – the time it takes for a system to translate your button press on a keyboard or controller to an action displayed on the screen. Low input lag is an absolute necessity for pros in the fighting game scene, so this is a great move by Capcom!
Input lag has been a problem for Street Fighter 5 players since the game’s release, and even the PlayStation 5 doesn’t seem to improve on it all that much. So even though the PlayStation 4 was the console of choice for Street Fighter 5 tournaments before the pandemic hit, many players made the switch to PC as more and more tournaments took place online.
The upcoming Street Fighter 6 could make substantial improvements on input lag with its new Input Delay Reduction feature. One user, Kimagre Gaming, got to try out the feature in a closed beta test and found that it significantly reduced input lag on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Although a lot can change up until the game’s release – which is slated for June 2nd – this is still a promising sign.
It’s great that Capcom has finally made the switch to PC tournaments, but unfortunately it’s not realistic for some event organizers to purchase and maintain gaming PCs for hundreds (or even thousands) of players. Plus, there’s always the possibility that input latency isn’t always consistent across all devices. Still, it’s better late than never!
The Capcom Cup starts February 12th, so get ready for some exciting matches! Hopefully this will be the beginning of more PC tournaments for fighting games.
