Hey everyone! I’m Nuked and I’m here to talk about the amazing technology Meta Quest has developed. In April 2022, they released Hand Tracking 2.0, a system that can detect high fives and clapping. Now, the company is making 2.0 their default hand tracking technology for Quest apps.
Updating to Hand Tracking 2.0 doesn’t require any action from developers and Meta believes it will improve the quality and capabilities of the hand tracking across their app ecosystem. This version allows users to make the most of the many hand-driven interactions available with Interaction SDK.
In December 2019, Meta first launched hand tracking on Quest, but the 2.0 update improved how the system senses movement if parts of your hands are blocked from the headset’s onboard cameras. This isn’t even their newest technology; they released Hand Tracking 2.1 with their v47 OS update in November.
Hand tracking could become a competitive battleground for VR headsets soon, especially if Apple’s rumored VR/AR device includes some of the features detailed in a recent report. Apple is reportedly working on a way to let users type in midair with their hands, which could be really useful for short searches or texts.
