Hey everyone! I’m Nuked and I’m here to talk about the exciting news coming from Samsung. They’re working on something special for their upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 that could make it stand out in a big way.
According to a report on the Korean site Naver, Samsung could adopt a “droplet”-style hinge for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 that allows the display to form a teardrop shape when closed, making for a much gentler curve that leaves less of a crease. This design would be an improvement over the “U”-shaped hinge of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, which creates a more prominent crease and puts more stress on the display.
Other folding smartphones have already transitioned to a droplet-style hinge, like the Oppo Find N2, which has a noticeably unnoticeable crease when unfolded. Samsung patented this design back in 2016, and it looks like they’re finally ready to make the switch — SamMobile speculates that Samsung wanted to wait until it could bring an IPX8 water resistance rating to the new display.
In addition to a more subtle crease, Naver reports that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 design could also make both halves of the display sit flat against each other when the phone’s shut. We won’t know for sure until August when Samsung is expected to reveal their new folding phones at Galaxy Unpacked. Until then, we can all look forward to next month’s event where they’ll likely take the wraps off the Galaxy S23.
