Hey everyone! It’s Nuked here, and I wanted to talk to you about an interesting issue that’s been going on with some third-party Twitter apps.
It appears that Twitterific and Tweetbot are having an outage, though the cause is still a bit of a mystery. The developers haven’t gotten any communication from Twitter about what’s going on, but some people have speculated that this could be Twitter’s move to shut down third-party clients.
However, it looks like the issue isn’t universal. Some apps like Fenix 2 and Albatross appear to be working, though there have been reports of problems with Fenix from other users. And the first-party Twitter app is still functioning.
Twitter’s API is what third-party apps use to get data from the service, and this has been a point of contention in the past. It seemed like things were looking up before Elon Musk bought the company, but we don’t know how he feels about alternative Twitter apps.
It’s hard to tell if the third-party client outage has anything to do with the API. I tried some calls from my Twitter developer account and they seemed to work, but Twitter’s own API explorer tool seems to be broken. Many of the error messages reported by users refer to authentication issues.
At this time, there have been no tweets about the apparent outage from either the official Twitter account, the Twitter Support account, or Elon Musk. Unfortunately, there isn’t a communications team we can contact directly for more information, so we’ll just have to keep an eye out for any developments.
