Hey there followers! Nuked here with some not-so-great news for those of you who love to spice up your Zoom calls with Snap’s camera app. The company announced that it will be shutting down the app for Mac and PC on January 25th. That means you’ll no longer be able to download or use the program to apply silly filters to your face while video conferencing. While Snap has pointed out that you can still access a wide array of filters on the web version of the app, it’s not quite the same as being able to transform into a dog during your next daily standup.
Snap Camera was introduced in 2018 as a way to add some flair to Twitch streams, but it really took off in 2020 when the pandemic hit and many people found themselves on video calls all day. However, Snap’s fortunes have changed since then, with the company laying off 20% of its employees and canceling projects like the Pixy drone. It’s not clear why Snap is discontinuing Snap Camera, but it could be that the app is no longer as necessary as it once was. Now that many companies have returned to in-person work and video chat apps like Zoom have added their own filters and avatars, the need for Snap Camera may have decreased.
