Reddit user Tim Slane pinpointed the location of a mysterious monolith in the Utah desert

Last week, a sheep-counting expedition found a mysterious monolith deep in the Utah desert. They warned the world to stay away from the monolith.

A Utah Department of public safety helicopter crew found a 10- to 12-foot steel object installed in the canyon’s rock floor on November 18th. On November 23rd, they posted photos of the object to Instagram and the DPS site.

The monolith is in a remote area and could require rescue. Within hours, someone had opened a Reddit forum to locate it. Less than a day after the sculpture’s existence was revealed, someone seems to have actually done it.

A Utah DPS public affairs officer did n’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the whereabouts of the mysterious Utah monolith. I’m not printing the alleged coordinates beyond confirming that the place is remote and highly inhospitable.

The Reddit user pinpointed the coordinates of a small Redstone canyon with a narrow gap that closely matches the social media photos. Satellite images from 2013 and mid-2015 show no trace of it, but it’s clearly visible by October of 2016, when the surrounding ground has also been cleared of scrub.

Slane says he’s honed with the online game geoguessr. Players deduce the locations of random Google Street view pictures.

He was aided by clues like the cliffs’ height, the canyon’s erosion pattern and a flat floor suggesting it was n’t frequently flooded.

This apparently does n’t answer the biggest question: who built the monolith?. This does n’t explain why the monolith was built.

The monolith was placed years after John McCracken’s death in 2011. Some news outlets have suggested specific avant-garde artists.

Petecia Le fawnhawk’s work is full of stark sculptures in remote locations. Just days ago, she posted a free-standing arch mirror erected in the sand.

‘it is illegal, destructive to the rock, and potentially disruptive to the Big Horn sheep if it becomes a trend,’ DPS officials said.
