(CBS Local) — Six months after Facebook’s tumultuous start under its former CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook has finally named a new chief executive.

The social media giant announced on Friday that the first to helm its executive ranks since Zuckerberg stepped down in April will be a 28-year-old executive named Chris Cox.

Despite having been Facebook’s No. 2 executive, Cox will now lead the company in the role Zuckerberg held for 16 years.

“I am excited to turn my full attention to making Facebook better for everyone—for those who use our services every day,” Cox said in a statement. “Now is a moment of opportunity to connect our community even more deeply, help our global community connect and strengthen relationships around the world.”

Cox is the latest hire by newly-minted Facebook board chairman Rishi Chandra, who previously served as executive vice president of technology strategy for Google.

Chandra said he was pleased to have Cox take the reins.

“I’m really happy that Chris Cox is the chief operating officer of Facebook,” Chandra said. “I believe that he is a tremendous leader, who has played a key role in the design and execution of some of the largest and most impactful digital products and services in the world. We are pleased to have him lead Facebook into the future.”

According to the company, Cox and Chandra are both committed to “making Facebook a better place for a more open and connected world.”

“In his role as chief operating officer, Chris will be responsible for strategy, product development, operations, safety and security and he will continue to work closely with chief product officer Regina Dugan,” Facebook added.

As we continue to transform our company, Chris will lead operations, products, safety and security and will work closely with new COO Regina Dugan,” said Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg. “Under Chris’ leadership, we will continue to develop products for a global community with privacy, safety and security at the core of our efforts.”
